Afghan Rulers Employed Abandoned British Gear to Locate Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Troops, Inquiry Hears

An informant has revealed an official investigation that the UK abandoned classified technology enabling the militant group to identify local individuals who worked with international military.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk

Person A, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to relocate and change their mobile numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's management of a serious breach of personal details involving nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to relocate to the UK to avoid the Taliban.

The Information Breach Occurred

A data file including their personal data, comprising names, contact details and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member stationed at British military command in last year.

The leak came to light only in August 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is this misconception that militant forces are without similar capabilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire a contact number, they can trace your precise location. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, Person A confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Preliminary research provided to the committee indicated that approximately fifty family members and co-workers of individuals impacted by the leak had been executed.

A superinjunction concerning the leak was enacted in August 2023 and prevented relevant facts about it from being made public until recently.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization associated with informed Afghan families they were assisting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and switched their mobile numbers. That constituted the two main details that, if authorities acquired this information, would cause them being traced,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower contested that internal investigation performed by a former official had been mistaken to determine that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are not confronting the Taliban; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves past work history.”

Person A described horrific treatment endured by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“We have had young kids who have had their arms broken to pressure households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
