Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but includes several key changes:

  • Each team includes just 8 real players, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by human gamers award full XP, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
  • Just a pair of maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
  • Features like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.

In short, this mode lives up to its title: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think it's a good idea, since it gives additional choices for players looking for alternative methods to have fun with the game. However, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, a lot of Battlefield 6 fans are upset.

Player Reactions: Anger to Support

"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your rivals," reads a response to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," comments another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user remarks, "It's unclear where we are going with this title," while another lists everything they consider to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."

However, amid the criticism, there are players explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," reads a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are players who actually go outside and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," adds another. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is great for me," and another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Valid Criticisms and Community Feedback

Despite the support, players have valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase wait times even longer for other modes due to the large amount of playlists currently available. Similarly, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the system. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base meeting them in the middle, as per forum feedback. A different user labels this mode as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, what prompted them to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?

If the development team has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it's that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Tasks that were overly hard were adjusted very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist isn't performing to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
