Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
A recent initialism emerged a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for medical staff to treat a child who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that atrocities are still being committed. Officials disputes these accusations, just as it denies all charges it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what unity resembles.
The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is entirely distinct.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
