Gianni Infantino has opened the door to further winter World Cups and Club World Cups, stating that the sport should remain open to new ideas about relocating major tournaments from the summer period.
Discussions Underway for Post-2030 Calendar
Discussions are under way about the schedule beyond 2030, a major sticking point because of heightened congestion from enlarged events. FIFA has set up a working group to analyze the situation, while the international organization has created a challenge by assigning the 2034 competition to the Middle Eastern nation. This competition will probably be organized in colder seasons, following the Qatar model. Infantino indicated the sport should get used to detaching from Europe's summer period.
“We're deep into detailed discussions, we're constantly talking,” he remarked. “The discussion extends beyond one event, it's broader consideration. Even to play in some European countries in July it is very, very hot.”
Enhancing the Competition Timetable
The president made these comments at the EFC general assembly in the Italian capital. He shared comparable views to the event's 900 delegates, saying: “We need to examine the globalisation of the international match calendar.” He cited October and March as “the months you can play everywhere.”
A major restructuring like this would create disruptions, even as FIFA's power to implement its wishes may be compromised if a formal complaint against its imposition of the calendar, filed to the European Commission last year by European Leagues, triggers legal processes.
Growing the International Club Competition
The governing body is considering ways to expand the international club championship. A 48-team structure could be implemented next time, possibly including entry tournaments that whittles the final number down to 32 teams. Infantino alluded to grand schemes in his Italian address, saying FIFA would “strive to determine how to expand this tournament, improved further, more significant.”
Possible Locations for Future Events
European and African countries are frontrunners to stage the 2029 event, scheduled to occur in the summer, while other possibilities are being considered. A quick comeback to America is possible and reports indicate the Asian nation, which was scheduled to host the tournament in 2021 prior to coronavirus, remains interested.
Officials are thinking about staging the international tournament every two years after 2029. Qatar is the strong frontrunner to host any 2031 edition, a move that would be simpler to implement should the proposed changes come to fruition given a winter scheduling would be required.
Issues with Overseas League Fixtures
Infantino said any permanent shift towards holding domestic competitions in foreign countries would be a significant danger. Ongoing circumstances saw approval given for fixtures in the United States and Down Under, emphasising this was granted as a special case. The governing body's approval represents a procedural step, yet Infantino seemed to imply the prospect did not sit easily.
“There exists a framework with competitions at national level, regionally and global level,” he explained. “This is the structure which built soccer the No 1 sport in the world. If we disrupt this structure, we gamble significantly.”
Catalan Club Rejoins Organization
Among other developments at the EFC general assembly, was confirmation of the Spanish team's reinstatement to the organization, foreshadowed earlier by Barcelona's leader Joan Laporta's presence at the formal event. The club had left the group after the abortive Super League project in two thousand twenty-one, which they championed alongside Real Madrid and Juventus.
The association chairman Nasser al-Khelaifi joked that their rekindled relationship had been formalised during a “romantic walk”. This return seems to to dampen prospects on any resurgence of the controversial competition plan.
