Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
