The nation's security cabinet has given its endorsement to the recognition of nineteen new communities in the disputed Palestinian territories, signaling a sustained drive for settlement expansion.

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and advocated for the move in concert with Defense Chief Israel Katz, asserted that the approval was about thwarting the establishment of a Palestinian state.

According to global statutes, Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are viewed as in violation of international law.

The move has drawn condemnation from Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "relentless" growth of communities exacerbates frictions, restricts Palestinians' use of territory, and threatens the prospects of a independent Palestine.

Increased Tensions and Political Fallout

Clashes in the region has surged since the hostilities in the Gaza Strip began in the autumn of 2023, adding to apprehensions that the growth of communities could deepen the Israeli presence and weaken the possibility for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The two-state solution envisions the formation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital, roughly along the borders that were in place prior to the 1967 Six-Day Middle East war.

Upon assuming leadership in late 2022, the current government in Jerusalem has significantly increased the green-lighting of new settlements and initiated the process of legalization for unauthorised settler outposts, classifying them as "neighbourhoods" of existing communities.

Ongoing Expansion

The most recent decision takes the cumulative figure of communities recognized over the last three years to 69, as stated by Minister Smotrich.

These approvals come only a few days after the UN reported that construction in settlements had attained its peak since the year 2017.

The newest group of authorizations encompasses the revival of two settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated nearly 20 years ago.

Previously, the Israeli government approved 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank - labeled as the most significant wave of approvals in many years.

Furthermore, the government also approved blueprints in August to construct over three thousand residences in the so-called E1 corridor between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement, a project that had been stalled for many years amid intense international opposition.

Regarding that plan, Smotrich said it would "bury the notion of a Palestinian state."

An estimated seven hundred thousand Israeli settlers live in approximately one hundred and sixty settlements in the occupied territories, according to the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now. This is territory that Palestinians aspire to have for a future sovereign nation.

Settlement expansion has provoked Arab states who have repeatedly argued it erodes hopes for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has furthermore sparked concerns about the eventual formal annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Former American President Donald Trump had previously cautioned Israel about such a move, telling TIME magazine that Israel would forfeit its backing from the US if it occurred.

Recently, the UK - along with other nations such as Australia and Canada - recognised a Palestinian state, a notable although primarily ceremonial shift in foreign policy.

The Israeli government was against this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a sovereign Palestine "is off the table."
