The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Fan Response

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Alternatively, why not reference the classics?

“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
