NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce he would live there right away following his victory in November.

"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live there, it will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his previous Astoria digs.

With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
